August 27, 2010, Newsletter Issue #250: Opening Closed Pinecones for Christmas Tree Crafts

Tip of the Week

So, you`ve gathered a bunch of pinecones together, but they are all too closed up for decorating your Christmas tree crafts. Here's a simple way to open them. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper and place in a low temperature oven (200 degrees) for about 30 minutes. If you leave them in a bit longer the sap(or pitch) will begin oozing out of the cone. This will leave a hard, shiny glaze on the pinecones and serve as a natural protectant. An added bonus to roasting pinecones: your house will be filled with pine scent!
